Split Your Phone Screen or Pop-up Apps for Samsung Phones

Do you like using Instagram and Google Maps at the same time? Or do you prefer watching YouTube while checking your email? Well, if you use an Android phone, the newest versions of Android allow you to easily multi-task with split-screen mode.

Split-screen and Pop-up screens on Samsung devices let you work with more than one active app at the same time. Split-screens basically allow you to use two apps side by side. The split-screen feature on Samsung enables you to divide the screen space into two re-sizeable halves. Each app is what you intend to run side by side.

The main benefit of split-screen is that it can display two active apps on the screen at the same time. With the split-screen, you can watch videos on YouTube while texting someone or scrolling through social media on the other app. All this is possible without having to switch to and fro between apps. Everything you need is displayed right there on the screen.

Split-screen Mode Basics

Android released a split-screen mode for smartphones ever since Google released Android 7.0 Nougat back in 2016. Some smartphone manufacturers offered the option earlier but many of those methods were a big failure and didn’t work effectively. However, Android Nougat brought a standardized method for a split-screen mode that works across most smartphones and tablets.

Some themes and manufacturers’ interfaces will interfere with split-screen mode. In case you have problems, you can ensure that your phone is running on Android 7.0 or later before checking to see if your smartphone manufacturer has created a different method to open split-screen mode. It is also important to know that the split-screen mode doesn’t work with all apps. If the app is not compatible with split-screen mode, you will see a message at the top of the screen telling you so.

How to Enable Split-Screen on Samsung

To start off, the screen has to be split into two by letting one occupy each app you are to use at a time. When that’s done, one will have two working apps spread over your screen that allows one to interact with simultaneously.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open one app you need to use in split-screen.
  2. Touch the Recents button.
  3. Touch the app icon at the top of the app preview.
  4. Choose “Open in split-screen view”.
  5. Now, the app will appear at the top of the display where you can find and add the second app you need in the bottom half.
  6. Choose the second app for the split-screen from the recent apps displayed.
  7. Alternatively, you can use the search option (named Finder) to search for the app name
  8. Select and drag the thin bar between the two apps shown to resize the display space for each app (optional).

Drag and Drop

To use the drag and drop method, just open the apps you wish to use in split-screen mode. Tap the app switcher icon, which is usually a square on the right side of the navigation bar, and choose the first app. Drag the app to the top of the screen to drop it into place. Once the first app is in place, simply tap the second app and it will appear in the bottom half of the screen. Once the apps are in split-screen mode, you can make size adjustments. To adjust the size, simply drag the divider line that sits between the two apps.

Long Tap

The second way to enable split-screen mode is a little easier if you’re already in an app and wish to open another one without leaving it. If you’re in the app, simply long-tap the app switcher icon. The primary app will minimize to fill the top half of the screen and you’ll see the other open apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap the second app that you wish to use and it will automatically resize to fill the bottom half of the screen.

How to end your split-screen mode session

Even though split-screen mode can be useful, it’s not something you always want to use all the time.

The first and easiest way to get out of split-screen mode is by long-tapping the split-screen app switching icon. This method automatically closes the secondary app at the bottom of your display.

The other way is by dragging the divider line all the way to the top or bottom of your display. This will allow you to select the app you prefer to keep open, as opposed to automatically selecting the app at the top of your screen.

Pop-Up Apps

The pop-up view feature lets one make an app’s window smaller. It doesn’t take up the whole screen, and you can even move it around.

Tap “Recent”, which is located near the Home button. Touch and hold your desired app’s icon, and then tap Open in the pop-up view. Remember, you can use your finger to move the app’s window around the screen.

Pop-up view also has other settings to make it easier to use. Here are what the different controls do from left to right:

  • Opacity: Adjust the window’s opacity from transparent to solid.
  • Floating icon: Minimize the app into a floating icon that you can open up later. You can move the icon around the screen and make more than one app into an icon.
  • Expand window: Expand the app back into its regular full-screen view.
  • Close app: Close the current pop-up view window. The app will still open under Recents.

You can adjust the size of the pop-up view window by touching its sides and dragging your finger vertically or horizontally.

The split-screen and the popup display are very innovative features offering a lot of utility to the right users. Remember that not all apps support multi-screen or popup mode. That options will simply be missing in the drop-down menu in such apps.
