What Is Neighbor Spoofing? The No Talk and Text Phishing Attacks
The term neighbor spoofing refers to the technique employed by spam callers and telemarketers in which they change their phone number to trick you into believing they are someone else. If you are receiving multiple calls from numbers not saved in your contacts, then you’re not alone. This is due to the rise in neighbor spoofing which is the latest Caller ID spoof trick used by phone scam artists to make you pick up the call.
In order to make their scam work, phone scam artists need people to answer the phone, so they can start the conversation and trick you into telling personal information or get you to buy their product. This is why scammers and robocallers use techniques and programs to alter their number that shows up as the caller ID on their victims screen.
Almost Same Number
They usually change their phone number to resemble your phone number or the phone number of people you might know such as relatives, friends, family, neighbors, and people at work in order to increase the chances of you answering the call.
In order to imitate your phone number, they may use the same first three digits as your number and also the same area code. In other cases, the number might be similar to that of a business, company, or a person you previously contacted.
When you answer these spam calls it indicates the robocaller that you have picked up and have an active phone line. This results in you being put on the ‘sucker list’ and making your phone line available to more scam calls. Thus making the scammers successful and happy.
No-talk phone scams
Most phone scammers rely on getting you to answer the call and talking to you in order to obtain important personal information by impersonating Internal Revenue Service agents, fundraiser managers, policeman, tech-support saviors or your relatives. Don’t we all get a call from someone pretending to be a manager at the bank or a representative of our TV Company who wants to fix our Television? But these scams have now become so common that most people recognize the fraud numbers and identify the scam. And day by day lesser people fall victim to such scams.
Unluckily, in recent times, new kind of scammers have come to exist who use techniques in which you don’t even have to say ‘’hi’ to get tricked and torn apart. Such sort of spams are known as No-talk phone scams and include the following ways the scammers can carry out such scams:
“Guess the password” scams
In today’s time, every business and company rely on customer care call centers to provide help and answer the customer’s queries. These services can be targeted by scammers.
In order to verify your identity, these customer care call centers ask basic questions such as what’s your birth date, what is your father’s first name? The problem is that the answers to these questions can easily be found by the scammers on the victim’s social media accounts such as Facebook.
After obtaining the basic information, the scammers call your bank and answer the questions with ease and take charge of your account. And before you know it your account is empty.
Other call centers ask a 4 digit PIN number before allowing access to the account. However, the problem is that there are only 10000 possible combinations of PIN numbers. This means if the scammer or criminal repeatedly keeps calling the bank and guessing a new combination each time they will eventually reach the right one. All of this is done without you even having a clue, never mind the talking.
Scammers also use SMS texts as a medium. They often send a text message making you believe that it’s from your bank. In the message, they ask you to text back in order to confirm who you are. They can ask you for a number or password which they can use to gain access to your account. Also, some messages might comprise of a link which when clicked leads you to a website that is identical to your bank’s website. But when you attempt to log in, no change occurs. You might think it is some error, but in reality, the scammers have stolen your username and password.
Text Phishing Attacks
Text Phishing is a scam in which the scammer uses emails, texting, and other such texting mediums and impersonates someone who they aren’t in order to obtain valuable and confidential information from you such as financial information, bank details, and passwords. It’s very common for scammers and phishers to pretend to be someone from the bank, but they also target other sources of payment information.
They usually disguise themselves your bank notifying you of a glitch in your account, a facility provider company such as Apple giving you a caution notice, if you don’t respond to, your account will be terminated or a delivery business notifying you about a delivery you missed. They usually use the element of fear to get a quick response from their victim.
