YouTube Gaming App is Officially Closed
The YouTube Gaming app doors have officially been shuttered. YouTube announced that the app would soon cease to exist last year. On May 30, the shutdown officially happened. According to YouTube, the app was just confusing their users and causing to many problems. As a direct result, they’ve decided to end the app.
The same service that the gaming app provides has now been incorporated into the main YouTube app, which now has an entire gaming hub. The company has also merged the subscriptions for YouTube and YouTube. They now direct the people that still use the gaming app to the new gaming hub, via a help page. Allegedly, the hub will do most of the same things that the gaming app did, but the list of games that are saved on the app might not carry over.
YouTube released the following statement: We launched YouTube Gaming as a standalone app for Gamers where we tested out new features based on the gaming community’s feedback. We want to continue to build a stronger home for the gaming community that thrives on YouTube, not just the YouTube Gaming app.”
Launched back in 2015, the YouTube Gaming app was intended to make the live streaming experience better for Gamers. The app focused solely on gaming videos, which made it easier for users to avoid video content that didn’t relate to gaming. Yet, several years later, most YouTube users still watch all of their gaming content in the main app. One reason is that a lot of people didn’t know what the gaming app was actually for. In addition, most of the app’s best features eventually came to the main YouTube app, which made the other app seem redundant.
YouTube Gaming Hub
The new YouTube gaming hub came out last September. The company realizes that the gaming community is one of the most active communities on their whole platform. Their intention was to create a central place for the community to experience video content. The standalone app made it difficult for users to find and connect with creators. The new hub hopes to make it easier for gamers to reach creators.
The hub will also incorporate personalized recommendations. While making it easy to find the most popular gaming videos based on your channel subscriptions. Creators will also have a spot devoted to them on YouTube’s trending page. Similar to how YouTube puts a spotlight on up-and-coming musicians.
Over 200 million people watch gaming related content each day. Having a central hub for gaming content makes a huge impact on the popular video app. Hopefully, this hub will help YouTube stay competitive with Twitch, the leading live streaming platform for gaming content. Which is also a subsidiary of Amazon. It sounds like YouTube is listening to their users and doing everything they can to provide a better streaming experience for the gaming community. The failed gaming app detracted from the idea that Gamers are an integral part of YouTube’s culture, but the new gaming hub reinforces the important of gaming to YouTube’s identity as a video and streaming service.
